Have you ever realized just how structured our lives are?
New developments are popping up every day. Every where we look, construction tells us that we need more stores, more car dealerships, more fences. Whether she likes it or not, Mother Earth continues to be altered and regulated by structures. But, take a look at the photo above. And how she breaks through those structures to take back her land…
This structure happens intentionally; with standards set for us by our superiors. They can develop unintentionally; with standards set by our peers and the people around us. A lot of them are set personally within ourselves.
I have recently been contemplating some of the many rules we are told to live by in order to be deemed “successful” to the masses and I have to say, it made me feel discouraged:
- Go to College
- Get Married
- Have children
- Work in your profession for 40 years
- Vacation for one or two weeks in a whole year
- Oh, and let’s not forget, make lots of $$$ in the process
What makes things more challenging is recognizing that our rules start before we are even born. Our gender, abilities/disabilities, economic status, and many more determines our limits and our path in life while we are still in the womb.
And the list continues to expand as we grow older in school, at our jobs, from the exposure we get from our peers, and the people we choose to “follow” on social media. We are fed the way others are living their lives and we start to incorporate their rules into our own.
Throughout our entire lives, standards and guidelines are being set for us.
Many people follow this way of life for security and comfort and to simply have the peace of mind that they know their lives’ path. This makes them happy and that is wonderful because isn’t that the goal in life? To be genuinely happy and content?
My purpose is not to discourage this particular way of life but to encourage.
For there are many of us who feel restricted by the rules we are given. We end up afraid to stray away from the status quo because living any other way does not mean success in the eyes of most people around us.
I recently read a fascinating article by The Skool of Life justifying why we should stop living in a world based on rules and I don’t know about you all, but I feel a major shift happening. It is becoming more and more in this day in age for people to live and think “unconventionally” and it is a beautiful rising!
At first, I was hesitant. It’s hard not to be hesitant when you’re plagued with the thought of the potential reaction you may get from others and the possibility of “failure”.
We are not all destined for the same outcomes, the same goals, the same definition of happiness.
It is time to take back our lives:
Let’s Discover and Be True to Ourselves
Let’s Ask Questions
Let’s Educate Ourselves on Our Own Terms
Let’s Make Bold and Scary Decisions That help us learn and evolve regardless of the outcome
Let’s take back our lives
How do you determine your destiny? Do you find it difficult to follow your path because of the views of others? How do you overcome those pressures?
